Clare Alexander
About

Clare Alexander is an artist based on the Isle of Wight, working in oil and charcoal, both en plein air and from her studio. She studied portraiture and landscape at the London Fine Art Studios. Before pursuing her art career, Clare spent 20 years teaching and living in Australia, Laos, Kazakhstan, and Slovakia.
Clare has completed portrait commissions for clients across the UK, USA, South Africa, and Slovakia. Her work is deeply rooted in observation, where composition plays a crucial role in creating a complete piece.
Focusing on light, the changing colours of the sky, and their reflections in nature, Clare aims to capture the fleeting moods and atmospheres that the landscape evokes. With charcoal and oil, she embraces the flexibility of these media to create thoughtful, emotive works.

Testimonials

“Clare, thank you so much for the portrait – I’m enjoying it very much. It’s a strange phenomenon – nothing like having a photograph and I keep noticing different things about it, colours, shading etc. You are very clever and it is certainly a very real depiction... I will keep pondering it, I am sure – thank you for doing and bringing it into our lives.”
Nigel Hartley MBE, FRSA, CEO Mountbatten

“Clare Alexander is one of those unique artists who has the ability to capture the moment in the most unique way. Her natural eye, her subtleties of colour and appreciation of light are not just a joy but also incomparable.
"We are proud to say that we have an original ‘Clare Alexander’ in our
private collection."
Dr Harry Brunjes CBE, FRSM, Chair, English National Opera & London Coliseum

"I love Clare’s vibrant painting of passionate, bright-red seaweed washed ashore on a warm summer’s day. The ghost of the Bembridge lifeboat station rising from the horizon bisecting the painting, reminding the onlooker that the rocks covered by the seductive seaweed are potentially perilous. It takes me back to a walk on Ducie beach, the year I sang at the Last Wight of the Proms in Cowes. When I saw this painting, it was love at first sight. I bought it on the spot. Thank you Clare!"
Lesley Garrett CBE, FRAM, Opera Singer and Broadcaster
